Have you ever tried honey? I mean in skincare, after making a lot of skincare over the years, I have used honey a lot as a minor ingredient, but this mask calls for it to be the star of the show. I tried out a Manuka Honey face mask, I’m hooked with this new fusion. It really was a different feeling to using it as a smaller ingredient and I used Manuka Honey this time. I have used regular organic honey before, not manuka and I really saw the benefits of using this on my face. My skin felt great afterward, it was soft and felt moisturised, it also softened some congestion I had on my cheeks and honestly gave me glowing skin. Honey has long been used in skincare, it is a humectant, which means it absorbs moisture from the air, keeping the skin hydrated. So Manuka Honey is a bit of maverick in the honey and foodie world, it can also benefit us in skincare, this manuka honey mask is great for anyone that:
- Has dry or sensitive skin
- Has acne or blemishes
- Has uneven skin tone
- Wants a deep skin clean
Manuka Honey has also become popular in alternative medicine to help healing and general health benefits. Some of the benefits of Manuka Honey are:
- Anti-bacterial
- Anti-inflammatory
- Balance PH
- Hydrating
All this talk of honey is confusing and I was too until I did some research. There’s regular honey, organic honey, clover, golden, manuka honey and over 300 types of honey available. The main difference I found out is the floral source that is pollinated by the bees. Manuka honey is harvested by bees that pollinate the manuka bush. It has differentiated itself from the many other varieties of honey by its healing properties.
For this mask we used a small amount of Tea Tree Oil, like Manuka Honey, has strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it an acne-fighting essential oil. Tea tree is well known in the skincare world for fighting acne and oily skin. There are a host of Tea tree oil products out there for youtube choose from as it truly is actually a wonderful acne treatment that you can use daily in a tea tree oil skincare, like cleaner, toner, serum and moisturiser.
Please note that you need to exercise caution when using essential oils, this includes Tea tree and all other essential oil. The basic rule of thumb is to never apply undiluted to your skin. They are very concentrated, and strong. More is not always better, so for this mask recipe, make sure to only add 1 drop. You can learn more about the dilution of essential oils on our Organic Skincare course from our Academy.
Some of the benefits of Tea Tree oil is:
- Anti bacterial, natural fight bacteria to cleanse your skin, so great for acne
- Anti inflammatory, reduce redness and balance complexion, also great for acne or irritated skin
- Reduce the appearance of acne scars
- I also love the clean smell of Tea tree, it is really something
We have formulated many masks with clay and they really work, I have tried substitutes and always go back to clays. Kaolin clay is what we are using here and they are gentle enough for every skin type.
There are positives to kaolin clay mask are:
- Cleansing deep into your pores
- Gentle exfoliation
- Reduces oily skin
- Heals the skin and balances complexion
- Circulation boosting
You Need:
- 1 tsp manuka honey
- 3.5 tsp kaolin clay
- 1 tsp water
- 1 drop tea tree essential oil
This makes face masks x 2
- Equipment required:
- 1 glass bowl
- 1 spatula or wooden spoon
- 1 face mask brush
- Make up sponge for removing or a muslin
To Make:
- Dissolve manuka honey into water, stir until the honey is properly dissolved.
- Mix Kaolin clay into water/honey mixture, this mixture should give you a perfect consistency to apply to your skin without being too runny or thick.
- Add 1 drop of tea tree oil and mix well.
- Ensure that you are applying it to a cleansed skin.
- Apply to face, with a mask brush for up to 20 minutes, you can bring it down your neck too.
- Wash and remove. Follow with your skincare routine, toner, serum and moisturiser.
- Tips for applying and removing the mask
- Before applying any mask to your skin, always make sure to cleanse your face. I would apply this face with a face mask brush. Simply apply a medium layer to your face and upper neck.
- Leave on your skin for up to 20 minutes.
- Rinse from your skin with warm water and a make up cleaning sponge or a muslin.
It was a bit sticky but not at all difficult to remove from the skin.
